Description
Emilien Feneuil Coteaux Champenois Blanc de Petit Meslier et de Chardonnay does not come to the bottle by shortcut, but by conviction. In Sermiers, on the north side of the Montagne de Reims, Emilien decided that the vineyard should once again resemble an ecosystem and not a monoculture. He has been working organically since 2006 and his biodynamic approach is more practical than dogmatic: let life return to the soil. They say that a trip to Morocco was a turning point: he saw old vines living alongside olive and almond trees, all growing "in community", and he came back with a stubborn idea: to reproduce that biodiversity among his ranks, even if it went against the grain in Champagne.
This Coteaux Champenois Blanc is just that, a bold decision: quiet Champagne wine in a land of bubbles, and also with an assemblage that looks at the rare and the essential. Here we find Petit Meslier (a minority variety with an electric nerve) and Chardonnay (the backbone of the region), seeking not so much the fruit as the mineral imprint of the place: chalky soils, northern climate and that natural tension that Champagne gives even without foam.
Winemaking
In Emilien Feneuil Coteaux Champenois Blanc de Petit Meslier et de Chardonnay the grapes go in with a clear idea: not to make up. Careful manual harvesting, gentle pressing and clean musts. Spontaneous fermentation withindigenous yeasts and ageing for 24 months in used barrels (Burgundy format), to gain texture without the oak shouting. The wine rests for a long time before bottling, refining on fine lees, polishing edges, compacting its energy. It does not seek volume through extraction, but density through patience: a terroir white built as if it were a great wine, not a curiosity.
Taste
Emilien Feneuil Coteaux Champenois Blanc de Petit Meslier et de Chardonnay in the glass does not explode: it insinuates. First there is a trace of fine winemaking -sourdough, soft bread, delicate yeast - and then, with air, a surprising note of restrained yellow and tropical fruit emerges, even a hint of ripe pineapple. On the palate, structure rules: the Petit Meslier shoots acidity like a lime and lemon lightning bolt, tight, vertical; the Chardonnay sustains with a discreet creaminess, more touch than weight. The minerality is chalky, almost wet chalky, with salivating salinity and elegant citrus peel bitterness. The finish is long, dry, crisp: Champagne without foam, but with the bare skeleton of the soil.
