Description

On the southern slope of Mont Pouilly, where the Mâconnais becomes limestone-rich, undulating and sunny, Antoine Vincent is committed to an almost Burgundian idea to the point of obstinacy: that a Burgundy white wine “Tête de Cuvée” should not be a formula, but a portrait of geological diversity. Here, it is not a single plot that takes the lead, but the intelligent blend of multiple “climats” from Pouilly Fuissé, seeking to ensure that each soil contributes its own phrase to the same score. Clays, marls and limestones in Fuissé form the backbone; sands around Chaîntré provide that fragrant lightness; more limestone in Solutré-Pouilly brings a mineral edge and a more refined fruit profile. The bold—and very characterful—decision is to maintain a decisive use of oak for this Chardonnay, even opting for new barrels, trusting that the terroir will not be ‘masked’ if the work in the vineyard and the balance of the grapes are impeccable.

Vinification

At Château Fuissé Pouilly Fuissé Tête de Cuvée, the harvest is carried out by hand, with careful transport and whole-bunch pressing in a progressive-pressure pneumatic press. The must is settled in stainless steel; after around 12 hours of settling, the clear juice is separated. It is then transferred directly to barrels at Château Fuissé, where native yeasts are encouraged to initiate spontaneous fermentation, with controlled temperature and humidity. Ageing follows the Burgundian tradition on lees, with bâtonnage to develop texture and aromatic complexity. It usually undergoes full malolactic fermentation; refined with bentonite if necessary and lightly filtered before bottling.

Taste

In Château Fuissé Pouilly Fuissé Tête de Cuvée, the wine appears pale yellow in the glass with greenish highlights. The nose ranges from crisp to deep: citrus (lemon, lime zest), ripe apple, and that Burgundian thread of almond and toasted hazelnut with a hint of smoke. The attack is straightforward: fresh, with a citrus bite on the mid-palate and a richness that doesn’t weigh it down, as the acidity keeps it firmly in check. Subtle stone fruit, nuts, delicate oak and a minerality that leaves the mouth salivating emerge. The finish is rounded yet taut, full-bodied, with volume and a clean persistence that calls for fine seafood or premium fish.
