From vines up to 70 or 80 years old and autochthonous genetics, Bründlmayer's 2020 Riesling Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Alte Reben is from a warmer vintage and was picked on October 10, yielding not more than 25 hectoliters per hectare. The nose is clear, refined and complex, indicating perfectly ripe and concentrated Riesling fruit intertwined with immensely mineral/saline notes. Round and refined on the palate, with ripe fruit and fine acidity, this is a full-bodied, intense and persistently aromatic and juicy Heiligenstein with ripe mirabelle aromas and lingering finesse and salinity. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in October 2022.

Description
Bründlmayer Ried Heiligenstein Alte Reben Riesling is a jewel of Austrian viticulture. Produced in the Kamptal DAC region, and classified as Erste Lage ÖTW, this wine is the result of the passion and dedication of the Bründlmayer family, who own 10 hectares in the Zöbinger Heiligenstein vineyard.
Since the 1920s, natural stone terraces have been established in the vineyards without the use of mortar, which now provide the grapes for this Riesling. The original Heiligenstein Riesling vines have been cultivated over the decades by cloning and layering. Today, the old vines (Alte Reben in German) are on average 50 years old, with the oldest ones reaching up to 75 years.
These older vines are less productive, forming fewer and smaller grapes that benefit from a well-developed root system, which goes deep into the soil and supplies their fruit with powerful nutrition. As a result, the wines from these vineyards are extremely flavoursome and highly concentrated.
Winemaking
The must is fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 15-20º. After this process, part of the wine is transferred to oak vats for a short ageing on lees.
Taste
Bründlmayer Ried Heiligenstein Alte Reben Riesling presents itself with a youthful, pure character, but at the same time offers an intense impression. Its multifaceted bouquet is highlighted by notes of fresh citrus peel , fresh stone and pomegranate fruit, with a hint of white flowers, hay, green tea leaf and yeasty spices. On the palate, this wine is vigorous but fine and precise, densely structured and perfectly balanced not by its residual sugar, but by its sugar-free extract. It is neither a powerful nor an indulgent wine, but a natural authority that maintains a firm tension until the finish, marked again by hints of bright fruit, spice and almost savoury minerals. It is a wine that promises incredible longevity.
