Winemaking
Semi-carbonic maceration with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks. Aged for 9 months in used oak foudres.
Description
On the gentle slopes of Régnié, one of the youngest cru in Beaujolais but with a surprisingly old expression of terroir, Pierre Cotton and Marine Bonnet are leading a project that is both a comeback and a reinvention. Heir to the family vineyards but driven by a modern concern, Marine decided to join forces with his partner Pierre, who is passionate about organic farming and winemaking without artifice. Together they founded Bonnet Cotton, convinced that Gamay still had many stories to tell if you listened to it carefully.
Their Bonnet Cotton Régnié comes from old Gamay Noir vines planted on decomposed pink granite soils, with quartz veins that look like tattoos of light beneath the surface. The altitude and slightly cooler climate of the sector bring a vibrant tension to the wine, while biodynamic vineyard practices ensure an intimate connection between plant and environment. Marine recalls that in 2019, faced with a harvest complicated by rainfall, they decided to vinify by minimal plots, respecting the expression of each micro-terroir as much as possible. A risky bet, but one that marked the fragile and sincere character of the wine they present today.
Winemaking
Faithful to the vin nature style but with an admirable neatness, Bonnet Cotton Régnié is vinified with whole cluster and semi-carbonic maceration in concrete tanks without epoxy, allowing the Gamay to express itself fluidly, without the make-up of wood or oenological corrections. Fermentations are spontaneous, with indigenous yeasts and without forced thermal control, and continue for about 15 days. Afterwards, the wine rests in foudres and used barrels for 8 to 10 months, where it is refined without losing freshness. Unclarified, unfiltered and with a minimum dose of sulphur dioxide, this Régnié reaches the bottle with all its truth intact.
Taste
From the first swirl in the glass, Bonnet Cotton Régnié seduces without raising its voice. Fresh red fruits - raspberry, sour cherry, redcurrant - intertwine with notes of dried violet, damp earth and a faint echo of warm stone. There is a certain aromatic shyness at the start, as if the wine is sizing up the drinker before fully surrendering. Then, with a little air, there is a whisper of rhubarb, even a subtle hint of white pepper and crisp green stalk, reminiscent of the noble vegetal character of the well-managed whole bunch.
It is on the palate that Bonnet Cotton Régnié comes into its own: juicy but firm, with a sharp acidity that sweeps across the palate like a mountain stream. Fine but present tannins, like smooth sandpaper, support a precise structure. There is no over-extraction or concessions to voluptuousness: the wine is pure nerve, taut, elegant. The finish is clean, saline, with an aftertaste of wild red fruit and graphite that invites the next sip. A serious Gamay , but not severe. Authentic, but not rustic. The kind of wine that accompanies both a semi-cured cheese and a root vegetable dish, always bringing a contagious energy, as if the vineyard were still alive in the glass.
