Buy Wine from Raphaël Monnier
Domaine Ratapoil is located in the picturesque Jura region of France, specifically near Arbois, in the village of Arc-et-Senans. The winery was founded by Raphaël Monnier in 2009, although his passion for winemaking began some twenty years earlier, working on small winemaking projects with his friend Jean-Baptiste Menigoz of Domaine Les Bottes Rouges.
Originally a full-time history teacher, Raphaël eventually decided to devote himself entirely to wine, reflecting his devotion to this art. Before settling at Ratapoil, Monnier collaborated on the Domaine Les Bottes Rouges project, where he gained practical experience in the production of natural wines. The choice of the name "Ratapoil", which is a local term for an amateur winegrower, reflects the humility and authentic spirit of the winery.
Vineyards
The Ratapoil vineyards cover approximately 2.5 hectares in the Arbois and surrounding areas, including Buffard to the north, and extend as far as Vadans between Poligny and Arbois for the white wines. These soils are characterised by marl and limestone soils that are ideal for growing local varieties such as Poulsard, Trousseau, and Savagnin, as well as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region is known for its continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers, which is ideal for the development of grapes with an excellent concentration of flavours.
Philosophy
Raphaël Monnier and his wife Estelle have adopted a winemaking philosophy that focuses on respect for the terroir and biodiversity of the vineyard. They practice organic agriculture, certified by Ecocert, and use biodynamic methods to maintain the health of the soil and the vines. The winery produces mainly natural wines, with natural fermentations and without fining or filtration, using minimal amounts of SO2.
Ratapoil's leitmotiv is to produce wines that reflect the purest and most authentic expression of their terroir. This is achieved through carefully selected winemaking techniques, including short macerations for reds and extended barrel ageing for certain whites, such as the Savagnin "L'Indocile", which spends 36 months in barrel.
Ratapoil wines stand out for their freshness, elegance and ability to convey the mineral essence of the Jura soil. With each bottle, Raphaël seeks not only to offer a quality product, but also to tell the story of its land and its winemaking traditions.
