Buy Wine from Luis A. Rodríguez Vázquez
Luís A. Rodríguez Vázquez is a TRUE colleteiro, with capital letters. Colleteiro is a local idiom to designate those who make wine exclusively from estate-grown grapes, and generally connotes a small scale production. Placed in the municipality of Arnoia, Ourense, Luís Anxo pays homage to a designation of origin that was hardly hit during the 80's decade due to the strong production of wineries who abandoned the native varieties as Caiño or Ferrol for some others as Palomino Fino or Albariño in order to obtain higher outputs and to be able to produce lots of Ribeiro wine litres regardless what we could say dubious quality. Additionally we have to consider the publicity that has been given to the wines from Rías Baixas, as if they were the best from Galicia; a marketing result that has badly damaged small producers such as Luís Anxon, Antonio Cajide and José Merens, just to mention a few. Hence, the DO Ribeiro is a legendary region that hides wonderful spots to produce impressive wines, smallholding wines quite on a Burgundy style!
For almost five years Luís A. Rodríguez Vázquez has been president of the Ribeiro regulation council and knows perfectly well the locations and the best terrains to produce wine whose quality speaks for themselves. He owns 2.7 hectares (about 6.7 acres) distributed in 29 plots, widely differing from each other and some of them leased. He is a clear ombudsman of autochthonous varieties and is keen on trying to recover the growing of those vines, which, in most of the cases, were uprooted considering only productiveness. Varieties such as Caiño Longo, Ferrol, Brancellao and Lado are the ones he uses to produce two red wines and two white wines of very scarce output.
Which are the treasures in Luis A. Rodríguez Vázquez cellar? Viña Martín Escolma are just about 2000 white wine bottles developed with the varieties Treixadura, Lado, Torrontés and Albariño, aged in casks of French oak. It is a dense, potent, mineral wine, with citric aromas, fennel, white flowers and white stone fruit bouquet; Viña Martín Os Pasás is the woodless version of Escolma. The straightness of wine is surprisingly pronounced by a huge acidity and a mineral temperament; A Torna Dos Pasás are about 4.000 bottles of a young wine produced with Brancellao, Ferrol, Caiño Longo and Caiño Redondo. As a result we have wild berries juice, with insignificant tannins and light as air. A wine you will not be able to stop drinking! A Torna Dos Pasás Escolma is the seventh wonder all dressed in red and with Galician accent. A wine that masterfully merges subtlety and flavour. This is an excellent example of a wine that has it all in a balanced manner.
