There are a number of grape varieties called Caíño in Galicia, and they are not necessarily related, which is rather confusing. There is a white one, and three (perhaps even four) red ones. The CL in the name of the 2018 CL stands for Caíño Longo, one of the different red varieties that has a deeper and darker color than the Merenzao or Brancellao, spicy aromas and flavors (freshly cracked black peppercorns is a giveaway) and pungent acidity. It has a medium-bodied palate and some grainy tannins that reflect the granite soils. This matured in a 300-liter used barrel for eight months. There are only 400 bottles of it.
