Description

Sometimes the story of a wine begins with a quiet obsession. In Rajat Parr's case, it was the need to reconnect with the land, to strip away the artifice and get back to basics. After a stellar career as a sommelier, his path led him to the cool, misty hills of Cambria, on the coast of San Luis Obispo, California. There, at Phelan Farm, he found an unspoiled terroir of volcanic and clay-limestone soils, where he decided to plant varieties that he felt could express something new, something pure. And in that search The Scythians Red was born, a wine that pays homage to the old, the wild, that which needs no embellishment to shine.

The grapes come from historic vineyards in the Cucamonga Valley: Lopez Vineyard (planted in 1912 in San Bernardino), Francis Road Vineyard (1905) and Galleano Vineyard (1912). Centuries-old plots that have survived wars, droughts and oblivion thanks to their extraordinary resilience. The varieties - Zinfandel, Garnacha, Alicante Bouschet and Mission -grow on ungrafted vines, without irrigation, in a dry, sunny climate and on sandy soils that favour the natural health of the vineyard. Respect for the environment is absolute: regenerative agriculture, minimal intervention and total confidence in the life force of the vine.

Winemaking

Harvesting is done by hand, selecting whole bunches of grapes which are fermented with their own yeasts in open vats. There are no pre-established recipes or artificial corrections: each micro-fermentation is an act of faith. After spontaneous malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to used French oak barrels, where it rests for a few months without unnecessary racking. It is not clarified or filtered, and sulphitation is almost symbolic, just a nod to stability.

Taste

Every sip of The Scythians Red is a step into dusty soil, a journey into the heart of the primitive. The Mission brings nerve and freshness; the Garnacha, juiciness and lively red fruit notes; the Alicante Bouschet, earthy depth and a whisper of smoke; and the Zinfandel, a spicy explosion with hints of ripe blackberry and a lightly smoky finish. The result is a vibrant, ethereal, category-defying red. Light in body but loaded with intent, it moves fluidly, leaving behind an echo of ancient civilisations and a promise of a more earth-conscious, earth-connected future.
