Buy Wine from Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce
Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce is located in the Manchuela region, a wine region that, although not as well known as others in Spain, has gained recognition thanks to the work of Juan Antonio Ponce. This young and talented oenologist, born in Manchuela itself, began his career in the world of wine at an early age.
At the age of 23, and after gaining experience in Telmo Rodríguez 's wine company and in France, he decided to found his own winery in his homeland. The winery was established in 2005, and since then, it has been a benchmark in the production of wines with an organic and biodynamic approach.Vineyards
The vineyards of Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce extend over approximately 55 hectares, of which 13 are owned by the winery and 15 belong to the Ponce family, with the rest being leased land. These vineyards are located in a region with iron-rich soils and at an altitude of around 1,000 metres above sea level, which contributes to a climate with cool nights, ideal for viticulture. The winery focuses mainly on the Bobal variety, although it also works with other native varieties such as Moravia Agria and Albilla. The viticulture is carried out following the lunar calendar and biodynamic agricultural practices, although they are not certified organic or biodynamic.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce focuses on making wines that reflect the essence of their land. Juan Antonio Ponce seeks to create wines that are "clean, pure, simple, direct and without make-up". To do so, he uses traditional winemaking techniques, avoiding the use of artificial yeasts and chemicals. Since 2007, they have stopped using sulphur in the treatment of the vineyards. Each plot is fermented separately, adapting to the characteristics of each vintage. The winery has also experimented with new varieties and techniques, such as traditional planting with field grafting. In 2017, they inaugurated new facilities in Villanueva de la Jara, which has allowed for a qualitative leap in their production.
In short, Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce is an outstanding example of how passion, respect for the land and innovation can lead a lesser-known region to produce high-quality wines that faithfully express its terroir.
