Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
From 32-year-old, 43 hectoliters per hectare-yielding vines on the Muschelkalk limestone soils of the cooler Clos Windsbuhl lieu-dit between Riquewihr and Hunawihr, the 2022 Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire is precise, coolish and fresh yet fully ripe and perfectly aromatic on the elegant and detailed nose. Elegant and fresh on the palate, with fine and stimulating acidity, this is a bone dry and slightly tannic but juicy Pinot Gris with a tight and almost a little astringent and bitter limestone finish. Keep the wine for another three years and you will enjoy its finesse and serious gastronomic character. It was bottled with a moderate 12.8% alcohol and less than one gram per liter of residual sugar. And yes, this 2022 is fully ripe and hasn't been picked too early. Tasted in November 2024.

Description
The story of Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Calcaire was born as an alternative reading of Clos Windsbuhl. Not as a lesser wine, but as a deliberate expression of youth and precision. Sourced from vines planted in 1992 on active limestone soils, this wine embodies an uncompromising vision: harvest at the right point, avoid overripeness, and let the terroir - not the residual sugar - speak for itself. Alsace, with its complex geology and moderate continental climate, gives here one of its most expressive combinations: the mineral austerity of the soil and the acidity preserved by cool nights, ideal for the demanding Pinot Gris.
Winemaking
The harvest for Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Calcaire is carried out with extreme precision, seeking to preserve tension and freshness. Fermentation occurs spontaneously and is completed dry, leaving no residual sugar, thus expressing varietal purity. The wine is aged for 12 months in large neutral wood vats, which respect its character without invasive aromatic additions. This serene ageing allows Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Calcaire to settle, develop complexity and clearly show its chalky origin.
Taste
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Calcaire does not seek to seduce with opulence, but with tension. On entry, its dryness and defined structure are surprising. Notes of white pear, ripe apple and lime emerge restrained, escorted by a vibrant acidity that cleanses the palate. In the background, mineral echoes appear: wet stone, faint smoke, dry hay, almost a whisper of toast. The wine is linear, focused, sharp rather than rounded in profile. As it breathes, it unfolds a creamy texture without losing firmness, with a long, saline, precise finish. It is a wine for those seeking clarity and verticality, ideal with grilled seafood, poached scallops or delicately spiced Asian cuisine. A pure expression of Pinot Gris on chalky soils: sober, elegant, unadorned.
