Description
On the east-facing slopes of the village of Gueberschwihr, very close to the Grand Cru Goldert, one of the most subtle and mineral expressions of Zind Humbrecht is born. This small plot - formerly part of the Grand Cru Hengst assemblages - was set aside by Olivier Humbrecht 's conscious decision to create a wine that, without seeking prominence, reveals the soul of the chalky soil from which it originates. With vines about 37 years old planted on oolitic marl and deep clay, Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Roche Calcaire conveys the silent strength of its origin: ripeness without excess, richness without ornamentation.
Winemaking
Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Roche Calcaire is made from a late harvest, favoured by a climate of slow ripening and no botrytis. The healthy, highly concentrated Gewürztraminer grapes are vinified with minimal intervention: fermented with indigenous yeasts in large neutral oak barrels, then aged for 12 months on fine lees. No acidity is adjusted and no sugar is added, allowing the varietal character and pronounced minerality of the terroir to speak for themselves. The wine retains a natural residual sweetness, perfectly balanced by a vibrant acid tension.
Taste
Zind Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Roche Calcaire presents itself with a precise, clean and elegant nose: fresh lychee, ripe pineapple, lime zest and a background of pink grapefruit, all enveloped in a subtly chalky note. The palate is enveloping yet slender, with a silky texture balanced by lively acidity and an invigoratingly saline finish. Notes of candied pear, rose petals and mild spices - clove, white pepper - appear without ever becoming exuberant. It is a Gewürztraminer of tension and depth, ideal for those who are looking for verticality rather than perfume in this variety. A wine with a precise identity, guided by stone and patience.
