Description
Vincent Girardin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is born from a deep connection with the terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin, north of the Côte de Nuits. Sourced from old vines over 45 years old, planted on clay loam soils with a high concentration of iron, this Pinot Noir seeks to honestly express the minerality and restrained strength of the site. Vincent Girardin, an advocate of precise but respectful viticulture, made an unusual choice: to go for a denser and deeper interpretation of the appellation, without losing the finesse that characterises Burgundy. His links with local winegrowers and his instinct for selecting plots with soul allowed him to create a wine that speaks softly but firmly.
Winemaking
Harvesting by hand allows for a double selection: first in the vineyard, then in the cellar, using optical technology in complex vintages. After gentle crushing and partial destemming, the grapes are placed in stainless steel vats. A cold maceration precedes the alcoholic fermentation, with pumping over and punching down for precise extraction. Vincent Girardin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is then transferred to oak barrels for 14 months (±30% new), where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. Before bottling, the barrels are assembled and lightly filtered. The whole process follows the lunar calendar, taking care of every detail.
Taste
Bright, transparent ruby colour, Vincent Girardin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes displays aromas of ripe red fruits -black cherry, raspberry- with notes of fine wood, elegant toast and sweet spices such as clove and pink pepper. The palate is firm, with polished tannins, lively acidity and a dense texture without losing elegance. The minerality acts as a thread, and the finish leaves hints of damp earth, undergrowth and a spicy persistence. A serious, sober wine, ideal for red meats, cured cheeses or to enjoy in silence.
