In the heart of Anjou, where shale and sandy soils drink from the mist of the Loire, Tonton Chenin Coquin is born, a natural white wine that embodies the lucid irreverence of Vicent Wallard. This winemaking duo decided to break with the status quo, working the vineyard like a living garden, without pesticides, without artifice, with their hands in the soil and their eyes set on the pure character of Chenin Blanc. "Coquin", mischievous, is not just a nickname: it is a declaration of principles.
Sourced from mature vines grown in sandy-clay soils over slate, this wine emerges from a microclimate that balances Atlantic freshness with full ripeness. Hand harvesting ensures healthy, vibrant fruit ready to ferment on its own.
Winemaking
The entire winemaking process for Tonton Chenin Coquin is an act of minimal intervention: the grapes, harvested by hand, undergo carbonic maceration with whole bunches for 4 weeks, then ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. No sulphites are added at any stage. Ageing on fine lees for 18 months in barrels adds complexity without robbing it of freshness. Tonton Chenin Coquin is bottled without fining or filtering: pure terroir juice, no make-up.
Taste
On uncorking Tonton Chenin Coquin, the first impression is electric: green apple, candied lemon and a mineral edge that evokes wet chalk and limestone. The palate is dry, taut, almost crisp, with vibrant acidity that caresses the palate with energy. As it breathes, notes of white pear, citrus peel and a faint herbaceous echo emerge.
