Description
In the heart of the Loire Valley, where the hills form a dreamlike landscape and the vines seem to converse with the wind, an unconventional gem is born: Sébastien Riffault's Sancerre Skeveldra. This is not the typical Sauvignon Blanc that many expect from the region. It is wilder, deeper, as if it holds in its essence the secrets of the terroir.
Sébastien Riffault does not follow the rules of the industrial game. His vineyards, with more than 50 years of history, are cultivated biodynamically, without chemicals, letting nature express itself at its own pace. Located near Sury-en-Vaux, these plots grow on stony, chalky soils that give the wine a marked minerality and an unmistakable personality.
Winemaking
If there is one thing that defines Sébastien Riffault Skeveldra, it is its artisanal character. The grapes, harvested by hand, are picked at their optimum point, and this is where the magic begins. About half of the bunches have botrytis, the fungus that transforms the grapes into little golden treasures, intensifying their concentration and giving the wine a surprising profile.
Fermentation is spontaneous, with no added yeasts, in old barrels that have been through many vintages. The wine then rests patiently for 24 months on its lees, without unnecessary intervention, without filtration that would strip it of its essence and, most importantly, without the addition of sulphur at any stage of the process. This is how a pure, free, soulful wine is born.
Taste
Sébastien Riffault Skeveldra is a journey in itself: citrus fruits, honey and a touch of yellow apple intertwine with notes of dried herbs and a subtly smoky background. But the real surprise comes on the palate: vibrant, palate-awakening acidity balanced by the silky texture provided by the botrytis. All this is topped off by a long, mineral finish, as if leaving the imprint of the soil from which it comes.
Sébastien Riffault Skeveldra is not your average Sauvignon Blanc, nor does it pretend to be. It is a wine for those who are looking for something different, for those who enjoy the unexpected in every glass. Do you dare to discover it?
