Description
If there is one wine that challenges everything you thought you knew about Sauvignon Blanc, it is Sébastien Riffault's Auksinis. Forget the ultra-fresh, sharp Sancerre whites; this is another story. Deeper, wilder, livelier. Riffault is a true craftsman, a man who believes in letting nature take its course, and it shows in every sip.
His vineyard, located in the heart of Sancerre, is a little Eden where the vines grow without herbicides or chemicals. Pure biodynamics. The soil, a mixture of clay and limestone, is the soul of the wine, giving it that mineral touch that makes you salivate before you even taste it. But what is really special here is the grape: 100% Sauvignon Blanc, harvested late, when botrytis has already taken its toll. For those who are not familiar, botrytis is that "magic" fungus that concentrates the sugar in the grape and gives it an impressive complexity. Here, up to 50% of the grapes are touched by it, which makes this wine unique.
Winemaking
The winemaking for Sébastien Riffault Sancerre Auksinis follows the same principle of minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation, no added sulphites, ageing for 36 months on the lees in old barrels. No filtration or fining. Thus, the wine expresses itself as it is, without any make-up.
Taste
The first impression of Sébastien Riffault Sancerre Auksinis is pure surprise. In the glass, the golden colour shimmers like a sunset on the Loire. On the nose, things get even more interesting: pink grapefruit, honey, elderflowers and a hint of walnut that makes you think of those organically aged wines.
On the palate, it's a game changer. Forget the typical cutting freshness of Sauvignon Blanc. In Sébastien Riffault Sancerre Auksinis there is ripe peach, baked apple, a hint of saffron and a distant echo of toasted almond. The acidity, though present, is more integrated, as if each element of the wine has found its place with patience and time. And the finish... saline, long, vibrant. One of those that leave you wanting another sip, and then another.
Sébastien Riffault Sancerre Auksinis is not a Sauvignon Blanc for everyone. It is for those who are looking for something out of the ordinary, something with soul, with history, with a little bit of madness. And believe me, it's worth every drop.
