Description
In the heart of the Loire Valley, where the wind plays through the vineyards and history mingles with the land, a wine is born that breaks the rules. Les Quarterons, the creation of Sébastien Riffault, is anything but a conventional Sancerre.
Riffault does not follow the rules to the letter. His vineyard is worked according to biodynamic principles, without pesticides or chemical additives, letting nature do its thing. The vines, around 30 years old, sink their roots in clay and limestone soils, giving them an unmistakable minerality. Here, Sauvignon Blanc expresses itself in a different way: wilder, deeper, without the typical fruity and fresh profiles to which many are accustomed.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, with patience and respect, selecting only those that have reached perfect maturity. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Sébastien Riffault Sancerre Les Quarterons then rests for 24 months, without fining or filtration, and with a minimum dose of sulphites just before bottling. The result is a Sancerre that defies expectations, with its own unmistakable personality.
Taste
From the first sip, Sébastien Riffault Sancerre Les Quarterons takes you out of your comfort zone. The entry is broad, with an enveloping, silky texture, but with an electric nerve that keeps it vibrant. Notes of ripe fruit, such as quince and baked apple, mingle with a touch of honey and toasted almond. But what is really surprising is its minerality, an almost saline sensation that reminds you of the soil it comes from.
Sébastien Riffault Sancerre Les Quarterons is long, persistent and with a spicy echo that invites you to keep drinking. It is not an easy wine, nor does it pretend to be. It is a Sancerre for those who are looking for something different, something with soul. And in each glass, it tells the story of a vineyard, a man and a terroir that refuses to be tamed.
