Description
In a restored 19th century farmhouse in the heart of the Baix Penedès, two Italians - MassimoMarchiori and Antonella Gerosa -decided to go against the tide. They left architecture and design behind to set out to recover forgotten vineyards, old vines and native varieties that no one else wanted. It was a decision as radical as it was poetic: instead of planting what sells, they decided to listen to the land. Thus was born Partida Creus, a micro-vinification project that acts more like a living archive of extinct Catalan varieties than a conventional winery.
Subirat Parent, also known as Malvasía Riojana, is one of those almost extinct grapes, which today revives in its rawest and most luminous form thanks to their vision. It comes from vineyards worked according to organic and biodynamic principles, where intervention is minimal and respect is absolute. The calcareous soils of the Penedès, with maritime influence and cool nights that slow down ripening, give this grape its sharp, saline character. In these white, compact soils, Subirat Parent finds its own voice: direct, undisguised.
Winemaking
Vinification follows the philosophy of minimum intervention: direct pressing without destemmingin a pneumatic press, a clean and uncompromising process. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, using only indigenous yeasts that express the character of the vineyard. Malolactic fermentation occurred spontaneously, without control or correction, and most importantly: no sulphites were added at any stage. Ageing was brief but significant: 3 months on its fine lees in stainless steel, providing texture, depth and that touch of raw bakery that rounds off its radical profile.
Taste
From the glass, Partida Creus Subirat Parent presents itself with an austere nose at first, as if refusing to please quickly. But with air, it unfolds: notes of grapefruit peel, crisp pear and green almond, with herbaceous undertones of wild fennel and dried aniseed. No frills. It is a fragrance of dry fields, of wind among reed beds, of grapes rather than perfume.
In the mouth it is linear, sharp, almost electric. It has a tension reminiscent of certain Jura whites: a lively, almost cutting acidity, but supported by a slight unctuousness that comes from the lees. The palate is quick but leaves its mark: citric, saline, with hints of green apple and lemon peel. The finish is dry, with a slight oxidative note that intensifies its authenticity. It does not seek to be friendly, it seeks to be true. And it succeeds. A wine for palates that appreciate the essential, the undomesticated, that which speaks unfiltered of the place it comes from.
