Description
In a forgotten corner of the Baix Penedès, where the vines coexist with the sea wind and the remains of ancient crops, Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerosa - a couple of Italian architects turned winegrowers - decided to listen to what the land had to say. Instead of imposing learned formulas, they let themselves be guided by intuition, chance and the voice of the indigenous varieties that were on the verge of disappearing. Thus Partida Creus was born, a radical, minimalist and profoundly sincere project. One of his bravest acts was to recover the Cartoixà Vermell, a rosé mutation of the almost extinct Xarel.lo, and to vinify it with the patience of someone who listens to a story told very slowly.
This wine, like everything at Partida Creus, is born unhurriedly and without make-up: from vineyards cultivated organically, in clay-limestone soils poor in organic matter, exposed to a dry Mediterranean climate, with cool nights that bring tension and nerve. Partida Creus Cartoixà Vermell speaks with an accent of the most ancestral Penedès, but with a structure and language that resonate with the most contemporary palates. This is an orange wine of pure grape variety, made with a long maceration that imbues it with character, texture and an absolutely singular personality.
Winemaking
The grapes, destemmed with precision but without haste, enter a 120-day skin maceration process: an extreme gesture that goes beyond extraction, seeking depth, texture, a liquid memory of the skin and time. Pressing is carried out gently in a pneumatic press, respecting the purity of the juice. With no added sulphites, the must was racked and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts at controlled temperatures between 15 and 18ºC in stainless steel tanks.
The ageing process lasts seven months in the same tanks, where the wine rests, refines and expresses itself without interference, without oak, without make-up, barely sustained by the electric pulse of its origin.
Taste
Partida Creus Cartoixà Vermell is not easy to catch: you have to approach it with respect, let it open up, let it oxygenate. At first, the nose is restrained, somewhat shy, as if coming from far away: pink grapefruit peel, rhubarb, a flash of unripe white plum. With time and air, notes of hibiscus infusion emerge, a raw saltiness reminiscent of broken shells and dried thyme branches.
On the palate, Partida Creus Cartoixà Vermell does not seek to please; rather it challenges. It has fine but palpable tannin, a rough texture reminiscent of unironed silk. The acidity is direct, but not cutting, like a taut thread that supports the whole structure. The finish is austere and dry, with an earthy minerality that lingers for a long time, leaving echoes of blood orange and a very subtle bitter background, like the skin of an almond.
A wine that does not want to be flowery or easy. It is an honest conversation, sometimes rough, but deeply authentic. A wine for those who enjoy a challenge and value what resists forgetting.
