Description
In a remote corner of the Baix Penedès, where the Mediterranean leaves its saline breath on the calcareous and clay soils, Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerosa - two Italian architects who left Milan in search of a life more closely linked to the land - founded Partida Creus. They did not come to follow rules, but to rediscover them. They recovered forgotten vineyards and almost extinct native varieties with a mixture of romantic stubbornness and radical faith in the ancestral. Among them, the Garrut, a local variety related to the Monastrell, vigorous, dark, with a rustic pulse but a wild soul. Partida Creus Garrut Ancestral is not born as a fashion, but as a form of devotion: a bubbling homage to the untamed character of the grape and to the territory where it was born. The vineyard, worked organically without certification or labelling, is grown in a microclimate of sea breezes and thermal contrast, which allows for slow ripening and natural balance. The altitude, the orientation, the lack of irrigation, and the use of intuitive biodynamic practices - more out of conviction than dogma - give rise to a wine that is anything but complacent.
Winemaking
The grapes are destemmed by hand, as they used to be, and left to macerate for three days, just long enough to extract character without stifling freshness. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks at moderate temperatures, preserving the rawest and most sincere expression of the Garrut. No additives, no artifice: just grapes, time and listening. Before fermentation is complete, Partida Creus Garrut Ancestral is bottled, trapping the natural carbonic gas: the ancestral method in its purest form. Ageing continues for 10 months in the bottle, with its fine lees, gaining texture, complexity and a veil of foam that seems to be born from a wild fermentation rather than from an oenological recipe. It is not filtered or clarified. There are bubbles here, but there is also life.
Taste
The first impression of Partida Creus Garrut Ancestral is almost telluric. A coarse-grained, rustic, vibrant bubble that caresses the palate like thunder in the sky before it rains. Aromas of wild raspberry, sour cherry, hibiscus blossom and a shady background of dry leaf and wet earth. There is something animal, something primal, that seduces rather than frightens. On the palate, the wine is crisp, taut, with a direct, electric acidity that stretches the Garrut profile to an almost punkish extreme. The tannin is fine but present, more suggestive than protagonist, accompanying the structure like a firm bass line. Notes of pomegranate, red grapefruit, and a slight bitter finish reminiscent of rhubarb and black plum skin. Saline, austere and provocative. A terroir sparkling wine in the wild, where rusticity becomes virtue and imperfection becomes beauty.
