Description
The story of Partida Creus is, above all, a story of rescue and conviction. Two Italian architects, Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerosa, abandoned their urban life in search of another scale, another rhythm, another truth. In Bonastre, Tarragona - under the merciless sun of the Baix Penedès and with the Mediterranean Sea as a distant echo - they found old forgotten plots of land, covered with weeds and memory. Instead of uprooting these marginal vines, they embraced them. Almost extinct varieties, with names already absent in the modern trade, spoke again in their wines.
Cartoixà Vermell, a rosé mutation of the classic Xarel.lo, is one of these rediscovered gems. Grown without synthetic products, in poor, clay-limestone soils, where the stones are heated by the sun and return the heat to the vines at night, the wine is born in a harsh, almost monastic environment. Hence its introspective, austere and precise character. The philosophy of minimum intervention and absolute respect for the environment translates into dry-farmed viticulture, with very low yields and risky decisions, such as letting the fermentations advance with no control other than that of the must itself. No make-up. No disguise. Just grapes, soil and time.
Winemaking
The vinification of Partida Creus Cartoixà Vermell Ancestral is almost an act of faith: direct pressing, without maceration, to capture the most delicate essence of the pink skin. The must ferments spontaneously, with indigenous yeasts, in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures, preserving the aromatic finesse and varietal character. At the precise moment - when the residual sugar barely sustains the fermentation - the wine is bottled, allowing it to complete its transformation in the bottle. There it remains for 10 months on its fine lees, which provide volume, texture and a slight cloudiness that is an integral part of its identity. There is no disgorging, no sulphite, no correction: it is a pure ancestral, without concessions.
Taste
In Partida Creus Cartoixà Vermell Ancestral, the glass fills with a fine bubble, somewhat shy at first, but persistently lively. The colour is an onion skin tone with coppery reflections, opalescent, like a semi-precious stone enveloped in mist. On the nose, it opens slowly: notes of grapefruit peel, rhubarb, barely ripe wild strawberries, but also a saline, mineral tension reminiscent of sea breeze on warm stone. There is something of fine yeast, of sourdough bread still warm, and a hint of bitter almond that reinforces its dryness.
The palate is raw, direct, with a sharp acidity that runs through it like a spine. The carbonation, far from being effervescent and playful, is serious, structured, more sensation than bubbles. The flavours are taut: ripe citrus, white cherry, a hint of green tea and salicornia. The finish is long, sharp, with an aftertaste of chalk and candied lemon zest. An ancestral wine that speaks of dry earth, wind and the patience of those who are not in a hurry.
