The 2022 Vertente is showing a little earthier, with darker notes of graphite and black fruit, a touch of licorice and the warmth from the vintage. It's more Mediterranean, with notes of aromatic herbs and slightly powdery tannins that accentuate the rustic side of it. This fermented in stainless steel with around 40% full clusters and matured in well-seasoned, neutral barrels (they renewed a lot of barrels in 2023) for around 22 months. This is also a Douro blend from different zones in the valley. 80,000 bottles produced.

Description
Niepoort Vertente was born from the non-conformist spirit of Dirk Niepoort, a key figure in the renewal of the Douro. Although his family has been making port since 1842, Dirk was committed to showing the region's potential for still wines, always seeking the purest expression of the terroir. His project took shape at Quinta de Nápoles, in the heart of the Tedo Valley, where old vines - between 30 and 60 years old - coexist with younger ones planted on schist and granite soils. There, under a warm climate but with a refreshing altitude, Niepoort Vertente is born, a red wine made with a traditional blend of native grape varieties: Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, among others. It is a wine that seeks a balance between freshness, structure and elegance, with one foot in the classic and the other in the contemporary.
Winemaking
Niepoort Vertente is harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and in the winery. The grapes are fermented mainly in stainless steel, with gentle maceration to prioritise finesse. Part of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels. Subsequently, Niepoort Vertente is aged for 18 to 22 months in used French oak barrels, seeking integration and complexity without wood dominance. The result is a precise, clean wine, deeply linked to its origin.
Taste
Niepoort Vertente has a sober and elegant profile. On the nose, it displays red and black fruit (cherry, plum, redcurrant), along with notes of graphite, spices, cocoa and a refreshing mineral background. On the palate, it is juicy and fresh, with lively acidity and silky tannins, which balance its medium body and give it depth. The finish is long, with an echo of damp earth, tart fruit and subtle dried herbs. A serious yet approachable wine that authentically reflects the new face of the Douro.
