Merry Edwards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir stems from a very specific vision: to capture the identity of the Russian River Valley with precision, depth and elegance. Merry Edwards founded her winery with the conviction that great wines should speak of their origin without embellishment, and that philosophy lives on in every bottle. Her connection to the land was always direct, meticulous and courageous; a winegrower who championed mass-selection clonal varieties and an almost obsessive understanding of the vineyard at a time when many were still simply seeking concentration and power. Merry Edwards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, made from 100% Pinot Noir, comes from one of the most privileged areas of Sonoma County, characterised by ocean mists, cool nights and a slow ripening process that enhances aromatic detail and natural tension. The valley’s well-drained soils lend finesse, vigour and that silky texture so characteristic of California’s finest Pinot Noir.
Winemaking
The grapes for Merry Edwards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir are hand-harvested and carefully selected before entering the winery. After destemming, the berries are fermented in separate batches to preserve the character of each plot and clone. A brief cold maceration gently extracts aroma and colour prior to controlled fermentation. The wine is then aged for nine months in French oak barrels, some of which are new, to develop complexity, spicy notes and texture, whilst retaining the vineyard’s character. Finally, the blend is refined before bottling, with a focus on balance, purity and terroir expression.
Taste
On the nose, Merry Edwards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir reveals ripe cherry, raspberry, dried petals and a delicate undertone of undergrowth, pine and sweet spices. On the palate, it is silky, full-bodied and polished, yet immediately displays vigour and freshness. Juicy red fruit intertwines with notes of fine cocoa, fine oak and a subtle earthy undertone. The finish is long, elegant and spicy, with that blend of refinement and immediate pleasure that makes this Russian River Valley Pinot Noir a benchmark for high-end American wine.
