Description
Merry Edwards Meredith Estate Pinot Noir originates in the heart of the Russian River Valley, on the cool hillsides of Sebastopol, where, in 1996, Merry Edwards transformed an old, abandoned apple orchard into a vineyard dedicated to Pinot Noir. That gesture spoke volumes: the aim here was not comfort, but character. Two years later, the entire plot was planted with a single obsession in mind: to accurately capture the fog, the slow ripening and the voice of this place. Today, under the direction of Heidi von der Mehden, Meredith Estate has become a living laboratory of precision viticulture and organic farming. The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir, a mosaic of clones that brings depth, aroma and vigour.
Winemaking
The Merry Edwards Meredith Estate Pinot Noir was harvested by hand, with selection taking place both in the vineyard and in the winery. The berries were 100% destemmed but left whole in the fermenter to preserve finesse and aromatic tension. The must then underwent a six-day cold pre-fermentation maceration, a key decision to extract aroma and texture without losing detail. Following fermentation, the wine was gently pressed and aged for eight months in French oak barrels, with 54 per cent new oak. Bottling took place after a period of ageing designed not to mask the wine’s character, but to sharpen its contours and support its natural structure.
Taste
In the glass, Merry Edwards Meredith Estate Pinot Noir doesn’t make a loud entrance, but it certainly leaves its mark. First come dried rose, black tea and a hint of sandalwood, enveloped in a very delicate, unobtrusive vanilla note. Then the fruit emerges: wild strawberry, rhubarb, red cherry and an earthy nuance reminiscent of fresh soil and clean undergrowth. On the palate, it has a juicy, almost mouth-watering attack, with acidity that stretches it out and gives it momentum. It does not seek excessive body, but rather precision, spice and length. The finish is flavourful, floral and slightly spicy, with silky tannins and a cool, almost misty elegance that defines Merry Edwards’ style. A premium red wine of great purity, refined and highly food-friendly.
