Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Notes of cassis, cherries, licorice, peony and orange rind introduce the 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains (Maison Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, layered and youthfully grippy wine framed by sweet, chalky tannins.

Features

Description

The story of Louis Jadot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains begins in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, where the maison Louis Jadot, with more than 150 years of Burgundian tradition, decided to bet on a terroir of austere and powerful character. In Les Vaucrains, just above Les Saint-Georges, the combination of limestone and marl soils, an ideal eastern exposure and a temperate continental microclimate, gives rise to deep, structured wines with great longevity. This cuvée is made exclusively from Pinot Noir, grown with a philosophy of minimum intervention and maximum respect for the soil. In a difficult vintage, Jadot decided to reduce the yield and wait for full phenolic maturity, a gesture of fidelity to the terroir that can be perceived in every glass.

Winemaking

The Louis Jadot Nuits-Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains is harvested by hand in small crates to preserve the integrity of the fruit. After a rigorous triage, the bunches are completely destemmed and placed in open vats -wooden or stainless steel- for a maceration period of 3 to 4 weeks. During this time, the grapes are pigeaged twice a day, gently extracting colour and tannins. Louis Jadot Nuits-Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, with approximately one third new oak, which adds complexity without overpowering.

Taste

Louis Jadot Nuits-Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains has a deep, bright ruby colour. On the nose, it displays a complex palette: black cherry, raspberry, redcurrant and floral hints (dried violet), on a background of damp earth, blond tobacco and elegant smoky notes. On the palate, the attack is firm but silky, with refined tannins and a vibrant acidity that adds freshness. The chalky minerality comes through with a saline tension that lengthens the finish, while notes of liquorice, bitter cocoa and an echo of truffle complete its expression. A serious wine, with a classic structure and sober elegance, ideal to accompany game dishes, noble poultry or roasted red meat. A Pinot Noir that whispers power and silently holds years of promise to unfold.
