Description

La Maison Romane was born more out of conviction than calculation. Oronce de Beler left Paris and the world of wine criticism behind to return to Burgundy and build a project deeply rooted in the land. Based in Vosne Romanée, he committed from the outset to rigorous viticulture, even working with horses in the vineyard – a decision as bold as it was consistent with his vision. La Maison Romane Pommard 1er Cru comes from a single, fully south-facing plot on the northern slopes of the appellation. It is made from Pinot Noir grown on clay-limestone soils, a terroir which, in Pommard, produces wines with structure, depth and understated minerality. There is no artifice here, only a clear pursuit of purity, tension and authenticity of origin.

Winemaking

The winemaking process for La Maison Romane Pommard 1er Cru follows a minimalist approach. The grapes enter the winery after meticulous selection, because everything begins in the vineyard and nothing is to be corrected afterwards. Fermentation takes place usingindigenous yeasts and with measured extraction, seeking definition rather than intensity. La Maison Romane Pommard 1er Cru is then aged in French oak barrels for between 15 and 18 months, sufficient to refine its structure without masking the character of the terroir. The wine is bottled without fining or filtering, with the aim of preserving the wine’s texture and vitality intact.

Taste

In the glass, La Maison Romane Pommard 1er Cru does not seek to seduce with exuberant fruit. It is deeper, more restrained, more serious. Notes of black cherry, ripe raspberry, blackberry and an earthy undertone of undergrowth, damp earth and delicate spices emerge. Dried violets and a faint hint of fresh mushroom also emerge. On the palate, it is full-bodied but never heavy. There is substance, but also a freshness that gives it tension and propels it forward. The tannins are fine, chalky and elegant, and the acidity underpins a long, mineral and flavourful finish. This is not a Burgundy red with coarse muscle, but a refined, dark, vibrant and deeply Burgundian wine.
