Description
La Maison Romane was born out of a vision of Burgundy as a conviction, not a formula. Behind it all is Oronce de Beler, who left Paris and her job as a wine critic to move to the vineyard and build her own project in the Côte de Nuits. That decision alone explains a great deal: here there is no seeking to make a splash, but rather a steadfast determination to listen to the land. La Maison Romane Côte de Nuits Villages Blanc comes from Corgoloin and is made exclusively from Chardonnay grown on clay-limestone soils, a classic terroir which, in this area, produces wines with a taut, straightforward and deeply mineral profile. The cool climate and Burgundian tradition do the rest, but always with an artisanal, organic approach and minimal intervention.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for La Maison Romane Côte de Nuits Villages Blanc reflects this philosophy of absolute respect for the raw material. The grapes arrive with their freshness intact and are handled as little as possible, seeking to preserve the vineyard’s natural energy. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts, and the ageing process is designed to develop depth without masking the wine’s origins. Everything is geared towards precise craftsmanship, without excessive oak or artificial aromatics, allowing the Corgoloin Chardonnay to retain its chalky tension and that sense of almost unadorned purity. Bottling aims to capture that transparency, that inner vibrancy which defines the house style.
Flavour
On the nose, La Maison Romane Côte de Nuits Villages Blanc does not play the opulence card. It is reserved and refined, with barely perceptible white fruit: firm pear, fresh apple, a faint echo of white flowers. But the essence lies elsewhere: damp stone, chalk, a sensation of cool air and limestone soil that dominates the whole. There is also a delicate hint of lees, a touch of white bread and fine yeast, which adds depth without making it too broad. On the palate, it enters straight and vibrant, with a lively, crisp acidity that propels the wine with great precision. It is neither unctuous nor broad, but slender, briny and very clean. The fruit reappears in a subtle way, always underpinned by a mineral base that lends it length and vigour. The finish is pure, persistent and elegantly stony.
