Description
Itsasmendi was born out of a rather unconventional idea: to prove that Bizkaia’s Txakoli can speak the language of the great white wines of origin. Itsasmendi has been pushing those boundaries for years, working with very different plots within Urdaibai, always with a keen eye on the vineyard and the Atlantic landscape. Itsasmendi Morga is one of those wines that does not seek to make a quick splash, but rather to capture a specific place. The vineyard is situated on a steep hillside at a good altitude, in a cool and windy environment, on calcareous slate soils that leave a very distinct mark. Here, the Hondarrabi Zuri does not become an exuberant or fruity white, but rather a wine of tension, edge, stone and salt. There is a bold decision behind this approach: not to tame the terroir, but to let the noble austerity of the vineyard set the tone. That is precisely the character of Itsasmendi Morga.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Itsasmendi Morga focuses on preserving the vineyard’s vigour whilst, at the same time, imparting depth. The grapes arrive with Atlantic freshness and slow ripening, and from the outset everything seems designed to craft a serious, food-friendly and vertical white wine. Nine months’ ageing in oak barrels adds an extra layer of complexity, volume and depth, but without ever masking the wine’s origins. There is no excess of oak, no surplus sweetness, no artificial aromatic embellishment. Everything is in the service of precision. The bottled wine retains that highly appealing blend of energy, substance and finesse.
Flavour
In the glass, Itsasmendi Morga is pure character. First come damp stone, a salty breeze, lime, lemon zest, and even a hint of delicate herbs and barely ripe green apple. Nothing tropical, nothing exuberant. Everything points in the opposite direction: austere, straightforward, mineral. On the palate, it opens with a deceptive finesse before immediately tightening up. The acidity doesn’t hit hard, but it does sharpen the flavour. The wine flows with tension, vigour and length, with a chalky undertone and a salinity that cleanses the palate superbly. The oak emerges as a whisper of sweet spice and texture, never taking centre stage. This single-vineyard Txakoli does not seek to please everyone. It seeks to thrill those who love serious, dry, stony and Atlantic-style whites.
