Description

F. X. Pichler does not make wines to dazzle with fireworks, but to capture the essence of the Wachau with almost surgical precision. At Klostersatz, this philosophy finds a vineyard with a rich historical heritage: one of the oldest sites in the Wachau, once cultivated by monks from Bavaria and Salzburg, whose legacy is enshrined in its name. In the Loibner Becken, between Dürnstein and Oberloiben, this deep plot rests on fine alluvial sands and rounded gravels carried down from the Alps – a soil that combines good drainage, thermal retention and slow ripening. This is the birthplace of F. X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Loibner Ried Klostersatz, made from100% Grüner Veltliner – a wine that does not seek exuberance, but rather tension, clarity and a very serious way of expressing the landscape.

Winemaking

The winemaking process for F. X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Loibner Ried Klostersatz is designed to preserve this purity. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected upon arrival at the winery, followed by manual destemming that reflects precision and respect for the raw material. This is followed by a brief skin contact of around three hours, sufficient to extract complexity and depth without weighing the wine down. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, a vessel that preserves the varietal identity of the Grüner Veltliner and keeps its spicy freshness intact. Afterwards, the wine rests on its fine lees for four months, gaining texture, a slight creaminess and a broader foundation to support its natural vibrancy before bottling.

Taste

On the nose, F. X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Loibner Ried Klostersatz is restrained, refined, almost austere at first, but as it opens up, it reveals white apple, crisp pear, lime, grapefruit and a hint of yellow plum, always surrounded by fresh herbs, subtle white floral notes and that white pepper so characteristic of the variety. On the palate, it is direct, lively and taut, with a clean acidity that sharpens the finish. The fruit remains precise, never exuberant, underpinned by a subtle salinity, notes of damp stone, delicate lees and a noble bitterness reminiscent of citrus peel and green spice. The finish is long, vibrant and stony, characterised more by energy and minerality than by volume.
