Description
F. X. Pichler does not view wine as a routine, but as an art of precision. In the Wachau, the family has spent generations refining a very clear vision: that each wine should be the exact reflection of its landscape. F. X. Pichler Riesling Loibner Ried Klostersatz originates from the historic Ried Klostersatz, one of the oldest plots in Loiben, originally planted by Bavarian and Salzburg monks, from whom it takes its name. The vineyard is situated in the Loibner Becken, on the bend of the Danube between Dürnstein and Oberloiben, on deep, unique soil consisting of fine alluvial sand and rounded gravel carried down from the Alps. This geological origin, combined with the cool climate of the Wachau and the region’s winemaking tradition, results in a Riesling of remarkable definition. Here, there is no pursuit of facile exuberance, but rather a commitment to purity, tension and fidelity to the terroir.
Winemaking
The production ofF. X. Pichler Riesling Loibner Ried Klostersatz follows a philosophy of minimal intervention and maximum precision. The grapes are harvested by hand, seeking the exact level of ripeness that preserves the Riesling’s natural vigour. In the winery, everything is geared towards preserving the vineyard’s identity: meticulous work, clean winemaking and ageing focused on transparency rather than artifice. The wine is vinified and aged in stainless steel, with no prominence given to oak, to keep the fruit’s freshness, the energy of the acidity and the terroir’s minerality intact. The result is a dry, straightforward and crisp wine, where every decision seems to have been made to let the soil speak for itself.
Flavour
On the nose, F. X. Pichler Riesling Loibner Ried Klostersatz is restrained, serious and deeply elegant. It does not shout, nor does it seek to seduce with tropical exuberance; rather, it unfolds with precise white fruit – pale peach, green apple and delicate mandarin – interwoven with lime zest, delicate herbs and a distinct sensation of wet stone. On the palate, it is dry, sharp and vibrant, with a taut acidity that runs across the palate like a thread of pure energy. The texture is slender, athletic and very clean, giving way to a saline minerality that asserts itself with nobility. The finish is long, stony, citrusy and refreshing, characterised more by definition than by volume. A Wachau Riesling of purity and verticality, serene, precise and deeply marked by its origin.
