Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The just-bottled (in September 2023) 2021 Penapedre feels very young and a lot less expressive than the 2020 I tasted next to it, more introverted and also a little more rustic. It feels tight, with some earthy flavors and hints of dry herbs, less perfumed and aromatic. It has the balance and the elements to develop nicely in bottle. 1,800 bottles were produced.

Description
In the steep heart of the Ribeira Sacra, where the vineyards defy gravity with slopes of 63%, Eulogio Pomares found a little hidden paradise: Penapedre, a plot of just 0.66 hectares on the southern slope of Esperón, with granitic soils and century-old vines that whisper stories of another time. Most of these vines are 150 years old, an age that makes them more like witnesses than protagonists, but it is precisely this accumulated knowledge that gives the wine an inimitable depth.
Composed of Mencía ( 64%), Garnacha (21%) and Jerez (14%), Eulogio Pomares Penapedre is a red wine that was not born to please everyone, but to express with character and conviction the soul of its terroir, thus integrating the varietal diversity that defines the viticultural landscape of the area.
Winemaking
The vinification of Eulogio Pomares Penapedre is as precise as it is intuitive: manual harvesting, meticulous selection in the vineyard and partial destemming. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in Castaño vats, without the addition of sulphites, also allowing for spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels, a decision that respects the character of the vineyard without imposing itself on it. Bottling is carried out without fining or filtering.
Taste
Eulogio Pomares Penapedre does not enter the glass with stridency, but neither does it go unnoticed. The nose is deep and shady: wild black fruit, blueberries, blackberry, with notes of dried violets and a faint echo of smoke and Mediterranean herbs. The granitic background comes through with that earthy, almost dusty minerality, reminiscent of the cool touch of wet stone at dawn.
On the palate, the attack is fine but firm. The acidity supports the structure with vibrant tension, while the tannin is ripe, polished, but with the necessary grip to suggest cellaring. As the wine opens up, it reveals layers of sour cherry, liquorice and a delicate salinity that seems to speak directly from the Esperon soil. The finish is long, dry, marked by notes of bitter cocoa and a fragrance of scrubland.
A wine like Eulogio Pomares Penapedre, for those who enjoy silence among rocks, the wind caressing the hillsides and authenticity without make-up.
