Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Böhlig Wachenheim P.C. is clear, deep, intense and creamy on the nose that intertwines lactic with reductive but also ethereal aromas of crushed flint stones and (Mediterranean) herbs. Round, lush and elegant as well as remarkably fine on the palate, this full-bodied, dense, textural and juicy Riesling has fine tannin grip on the saline and savory finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam 30 cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2025.

Features

Description

At the foot of the Haardt massif, where the forest caresses the sandstone and limestone slopes, Böhlig Wachenheim P.C. is born, one of the silent jewels of Dr. Bürklin-Wolf. This winery, with more than four centuries of history, has been able to interpret the language of the terroir like few others, guided by a biodynamic philosophy that prioritises the life of the soil and the authenticity of the wine. The Böhlig plot, with 3.11 hectares facing southeast, benefits from optimal sun exposure and a unique subsoil in the region: a mixture of red and yellow sandstone with a rare high limestone content, responsible for the tense and saline structure that defines this Riesling from Pfalz.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, with meticulous selection of the bunches in the vineyard. The grapes for Dr. Bürklin Wolf Böhlig Wachenheim PC are gently pressed and the must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in large neutral wooden vats. There it rests on fine lees for several months, which adds texture and complexity without detracting from the transparency of the wine's profile. The approach is one of minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard's energy to express itself unfiltered.

Taste

Dr. Bürklin - Wolf Böhlig Wachenheim PC opens with a precise, restrained nose: mineral notes of flint stone, a subtle lactic trace and aromas of dried herbs such as sage and rosemary. The palate is dense, full-bodied, but articulated with great elegance. The fruit appears in the background - quince, candied lemon, ripe apple - wrapped in a saline, chalky character that defines its essence. The finish is long, with a slight tannic grip and vibrant acidity that cleanses the palate. A wine of tension and balance, serious yet luminous, that purely embodies the stony soul of the Pfalz.
