Description

Château Fuissé Pouilly Fuissé 1er Cru Le Clos is not the result of a ‘recipe’, but of an obsession: to capture the very essence of a place in a bottle. Le Clos is a monopole that surrounds the château, a legendary plot of some 2.68 hectares with gentle slopes and an east/southeast aspect, where the roots of old vines (averaging over 50 years old, with even older vines) pierce successive layers of clay and limestone. Here, in the heart of the Mâconnais and the Pouilly Fuissé AOC, the Vincent family—now with Antoine at the helm—made a bold decision: not to “dress up” the wine for immediate appeal, but to let the soil speak for itself. The plot is divided into three “worlds”: below, deep clays that lend body; in the centre, brown marl that heightens the freshness; above, white limestone with flint that refines the mineral energy. There is but one variety, and it is enough: Chardonnay.

Vinification

At Château Fuissé Pouilly Fuissé 1er Cru Le Clos, the harvest is carried out by hand and the grapes arrive whole at the press: whole-bunch pressing in a pneumatic press with progressive cycles to extract precision, not bitterness. After static settling, the clear must is transferred to barrels with light oxygenation. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts and, generally, undergoes malolactic fermentation. Ageing is carried out‘sur lie’in the Burgundian style, with bâtonnage when the wine requires it to gain body without losing its structure. Each geological sector is vinified separately and blended following regular racking and tastings. If necessary, gentle clarification with bentonite and light filtration; followed by resting in tank prior to bottling.

Taste

In the glass, Château Fuissé Pouilly Fuissé 1er Cru Le Clos combines purity and power. The nose opens with ripe citrus —lemon, grapefruit peel—and a refreshing hint of mint, followed by toasted brioche, fresh almond and a touch of delicate butter. It is not a loud white: it is a Burgundy Chardonnay with a soft voice and perfect articulation. On the palate, it is dense and concentrated, but the chalky vein soon straightens the line: crisp white fruit, hints of light honey and white flowers, all underpinned by a flinty minerality that leaves the palate clean. The finish is long, briny and elegant, with a tension that calls for a meal: turbot, lobster or Bresse chicken with a creamy sauce.
