Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 La Tendida is the fourth vintage of a young Monastrell from the paraje, or lieu-dit, that it's named for, planted between 2006 and 2010. The soils here are a transition between the valley and the slopes, and the 100% Monastrell makes it more serious—in the years of better yields, it has some Garnacha, but this year, that was not possible. It's quite spicy, with a rustic/earthy touch, redolent of tree bark, and is a little herbal, with good ripeness and a contained 14% alcohol, one of the lowest in 2023. They picked the grapes quite early, just as they were finishing picking the Garnacha. They didn't want any over-ripeness because, even after the rain in August, the year was warm and dry. This fermented with 50% full clusters in the underground lagares and matured in foudre. 20,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2025.

Description
Casa Castillo La Tendida is a wine that excellently represents the oldest vines of the winery's vineyards. Made mainly from 85% Monastrell and 15% Garnacha, this wine has an intense colour, an expressive nose and a fresh and refined taste. It surprises for its fruity character and its persistence in the mouth.
It comes from a selection of plots in an area known on the estate as 'La Tendida'. This is an area of gentle north-facing slopes where the soils are sandy and calcareous. The plants are between 12 and 15 years old, vase trained and yields are low. Cultivation is dry-farmed.
Elaboration
The winemaking process is minimal intervention. Alcoholic fermentation is traditional and takes place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in underground stone vats at a temperature of between 30º and 32º degrees centigrade. Seventy percent destemmed grapes and 30% whole grapes are used. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in vats. It is aged for 12 months in 5,000-litre foudres and 500-litre oak barrels. The wine is bottled unclarified and unfiltered.
Taste
In Casa Castillo La Tendida the contribution of the Garnacha is especially noticeable on the nose, where there are evident fruity notes that Monastrell does not usually have. On the palate, the wine is more spicy, with a medium/high body. It is quite elegant and refined, being a balanced and enjoyable wine, with a persistence in the mouth that surprises and delights the palate. Notes of ripe fruit, dried herbs, red fruit and spicy hints combine to offer a unique sensory experience.
