Viñedos y Bodegas Pittacum is one of the wineries belonging to Terras Gauda group, well known for its Rías Baixas wines from the O Rosal area that have been mastering Albariño grape for years, offering pleasant wines… real peach and lychee perfumes!. The group, additionally to Pittacum winery, also have Quinta Sardonia, placed in the heart of Ribera del Duero, halfway between Peñafiel and Valladolid.
But Viñedos y Bodegas Pittacum is for sure the least ambitious and more peculiar branch. We are in Bierzo region, in Arganza more specifically, close to Ponferrada, the capital. This zone has a magic similar to Burgundy, where the vineyards are spread in small plots along the valleys of the mountains. The star variety is Mencía in mild continental climate with heavy rainfall and very diverse soils, prevailing clay, slate and quartz. Pittacum has 5 hectares of century-old vines, goblet planted, that produce wine since 1999, when Bierzo was totally unknown, before people as Álvaro Palacio or Raúl Pérez appeared there.
The harvest at Pittacum is carried out in 15kg boxes that are screened just after entering the winery in a selection table, all the damaged berries are rejected. Then the stemming takes place and grapes are put in stainless steel tanks of 15.000 litres for the alcoholic fermentation. Malolactic fermentation will be carried out subsequently, part in the stainless steel tanks and part in French oak barrels.
Pittacum wines are: Pittacum is the resulting blend of 200 plots with deep soils settled on mountain slopes. It is a spiced wine, full of the typical fruity Mencía sensations, with easy and pleasant drink. Pittacum Aurea has its origins in Areixola estate, a hardly accessible plot where only man can conduct the land work. This is a delectable wine yet with some alcoholic sensation so it is better served cold. La Prohibición is a blend of Garnacha Tintorera and Mencía that produces a highly coloured wine with pipe tobacco and liquorice nuances. Finally Tres Obispos is the rosé wine by Pittacum, grown in a cold, clay plot with vines facing north. A surprising rosé with lively acidity and fruity outburst.
