The Marqués de Murrieta winery has more than 150 years of history and is one of the most emblematic in Spain.
Throughout its long history, this winery has revolutionised the wine of La Rioja and has remained faithful to its principles of honesty and quality.
Origin of Marqués de Murrieta Winery
Undoubtedly, the origin of this winery is linked to the origin of Rioja wine, and it has played an important role in the development of La Rioja since its birth as a modern wine region in the mid-19th century.
The origin of the winery dates back to the time when its founder Don Luciano Murrieta, a Peruvian emigrant to Spain who studied winemaking in Bordeaux, made the first wine in La Rioja in 1852, with the intention of making it last in time.
In the elaboration of this wine, the techniques that its founder studied in Bordeaux were applied, and thanks to his hard work, his wines would have the capacity to be exported.
In his work, Don Luciano's premise was that a wine with Rioja quality and good ageing would have the capacity to be exported. With this in mind, he sent his 1852 wine to Mexico and Cuba, making it the first Rioja to be exported.
The winery remained in the Murrieta family until 1983, when the father of the Cebrián-Sagarriga family bought the then abandoned estate. Since then, the Cebrián-Sagarriga family has been in charge of the winery.
Nowadays, Vicente D. Cebrián-Sagarriga, current Count of Creixell, together with Cristina, his sister, are in charge of the winery. María Vargas, considered the Best Winemaker in the World 2017, is in charge of the technical management of the winery.
Ygay Castle
The Castillo de Ygay, home to the original winery, was built in the mid-19th century on the grounds of the same estate.
In the late 1870s, Don Luciano moved into Finca Ygay. The Castle became the headquarters of the Marqués de Murrieta Winery and was declared a museum in 2019.
The construction follows the concept of the Bordeaux châteaux. Today this structure is part of an impressive group of buildings, which have been restored.
Re-opened in autumn 2014, it has become the oldest industrial building in Hong Kong dollarpe and is a benchmark of modernity and balance. Inside it houses invaluable documentation on the origins of La Rioja wine, and the most extensive private collection of historic bottles in the world.
Its vineyards
The wines of this magnificent winery are born in Finca Ygay, where a 300 hectare vineyard in La Rioja Alta surrounds the winery, making it possible to control the quality of the wines.
This vineyard is part of the beautiful history of success and achievements of this winery that began with the purpose of making a quality wine by Don Luciano Murrieta.
And you, have you already tasted some of the exquisite wines of this centenary winery? Do you dare?
