Buy Wine from Château Léoville Las Cases
Château Léoville Las Cases has a long history and is one of the first châteaux to emerge in the Médocregion along with Château Margaux and Château Latour. It all began in 1683 when Jean de Moytié, a member of the Bordeaux parliament, acquired some land in the commune of Saint Julien and named the property Mont-Moytié. After 100 years in the hands of the Jean de Moytié family, the property fell into the hands of the Gascq family due to the marriage between Alexander Gascq and Jean de Moytié's great-granddaughter. Alexander will rename the estate and it will be renamed Léoville.
With the French Revolution, a large part of the property was sold to Hugh Barton who founded his wine estate Léoville Barton. The remaining part of Léoville was divided into two parts within the Lascaze family: the eldest son of the Marquis Lascaze, Pierre Jean de Lascaze, founded Château Léoville Las Cases; and on the other hand his sister Jeanne died and it was her daughter married to Baron Jean-Marie Poyferré, who named her part as Château Léoville Poyferré. Despite this family division between Las Cases and Poyferré, today we can see how the two buildings are perfectly connected by a door and the parking area is shared.
Since 1900 Léoville Las Cases has belonged to the Delon family, thanks in part to Théophile Skawinski who bought the property and became its manager. One of Skawinski's daughters married André Delon, who transferred his shares as a dowry. Today Jean-Hubert Delon is the head of the family business and the family owns two more properties: Château Potensac in Médoc and Nenin in Pomerol.
The 98 hectares of vineyards of Léoville Las Cases are located in the north of the commune of Saint-Julien, on the border with Pauillac. The most representative block of land called Gran Clos, very close to Château Latour, benefits from a soil of gravel and clay. The varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), Merlot (24%), Cabernet Franc (9%) and Petit Verdot (1%), with a density of 8600 vines per hectare and an average vineyard age of 40 years.
With only 215,000 bottles per year, Léoville Las Cases produces three wines: Château Léoville Las Cases is a wine with race, powerful but with fine tannins. A wine with great aging potential in which the perfumes of cassis, blackberries, tobacco and licorice emerge; Clos du Marquis has been produced since 1902 and is a parcel selection different from Léoville Las Cases so the property considers it another wine and not a second wine. Blackberries, raspberries, cassis and cocoa diffuse the wine's characteristic fresh fruit profile. Elegant and at a sexy price; and Le Petit Lion is Léoville's second wine, well made and very moderately priced. A great find in the market for inexpensive Bordeaux wines.
