Buy Wine from Can Ràfols dels Caus
The Can Ràfols dels Caus winery is located in the heart of the Massís del Garraf, a unique geographical region in Catalonia. This original property is a farmhouse of Roman origin with a markedly Mediterranean character.
History
In 1979, Carlos Esteva decided to move to his grandfather's estate, Can Ràfols dels Caus, a farmhouse located in the middle of the Massís del Garraf and a few kilometres from the Font de la Canya, a centre of goods from the Iberian period considered to be the origin of the vineyard in both the Penedès and Catalonia. His first contact with viticulture took place in Menorca in the 1970s, but it was when he took over the family estate that he decided to dedicate himself fully to the production of quality wines, enhancing the characteristics of the landscape and the architecture of the area in a sustainable framework.
Carlos Esteva, the visionary, innovator and pioneer behind Can Ràfols dels Caus wines, has dedicated his life to winemaking excellence, introducing new varieties and cultivation methods. His career in the world of wine has been characterised by a culture of visionary innovation, and he has been a significant leader in the sector. He has also been recognised for his contribution to organic agriculture and the production of wines with varieties such as Xarel-lo and Sumoll.
Vineyards
The Can Ràfols dels Caus vineyards are located at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level and occupy some 90 hectares of land, fragmented into small plots. A wide range of up to 28 grape varieties are grown here. Carlos Esteva has highlighted the value of the native varieties, such as Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Sumoll, with some plots planted in 1934. These vines coexist with other varieties that have adapted perfectly to the Garraf Massif, such as Chenin Blanc and Incrocio Manzoni, practically unheard of in Catalonia and Spain. The terrain is a large limestone mass, and the climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Can Ràfols dels Caus focuses on sustainability and respect for nature. Aware that good wines can only come from good grapes, great care is taken to let nature take its course, dispensing with chemical products and using only organic fertilisers.
Harvesting is done by hand, and spontaneous fermentations are respected, without the addition of selected yeasts, in order to obtain the best wine. The vineyards are certified organic and some plots are cultivated biodynamically. In addition, the winery has been designed with a deep respect for the environment, integrating completely into the landscape and facilitating winemaking.
