Bodegas Argüeso is located in the heart of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a town in Cádiz known for being the birthplace of Manzanilla and for its direct relationship with the Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Designation of Origin.
The history of this emblematic bodega begins in 1822, when León de Argüeso y Argüeso, a merchant from Arija (Burgos), settles in Sanlúcar and acquires some old soleras and the San José bodega in Callejón de Santo Domingo. These soleras were already more than 250 years old, laying the foundations of what is today a wine legacy.Over time, the winery expanded significantly, adding new facilities around the original Bodega San José and expanding to a vast 13,500 square metres. This growth included the purchase of other historic buildings, such as the Santo Domingo convent, of which parts such as the Refectory and the Sacristy, with its impressive 16th century coffered ceilings, remain.
In 2016, Francisco Yuste, a local businessman with a great track record in the wine sector, acquired Herederos de Argüeso, S.A., with the aim of restoring the international prestige of its wines, especially its Manzanilla. Under his management, the Manzanilla San León was awarded the title of best Manzanilla in the world at the International Wine Challenge in London. In addition, the Amontillado 1822 Solera Fundacional has been recognised as the best fortified wine in Spain and Portugal at the Vinduero-Vindouro Awards in 2020.
Vineyards
Bodegas Argüeso 's vineyards are located in the area of influence of the Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Designation of Origin. The Sanlúcar de Barrameda region benefits from a unique microclimate, influenced by both the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean and the Guadalquivir River. This coastal climate offers cool, humid winds that favour optimal grape ripening, contributing to the development of the organic aged wines under the veil of flor, characteristic of Manzanilla.
The terroir of this region is another of its great allies. The predominant soils are albarizas, a type of light-coloured limestone soil that has a great capacity to retain humidity, allowing the vines to withstand the long dry summers of the area. These albarizas, together with the gentle slopes of the land, allow for excellent sun exposure and adequate ripening of the grapes.
Bodegas Argüeso cultivates traditional varieties of the region, such as Palomino Fino, used for the production of manzanillas, finos and amontillados, and Pedro Ximénez, used for sweet wines.
Philosophy
Bodegas Argüeso 's philosophy is based on respect for tradition and craftsmanship, combined with constant innovation and meticulous care in the production of its wines. Since its beginnings, the winery has followed the criaderas and soleras system, a unique ageing technique that allows the blending of wines from different vintages to achieve balance and consistency in its products, maintaining quality over time.
The winemaking process is still handcrafted, especially in the production of its manzanilla, where the conditions of Sanlúcar's natural environment are used to the maximum. Ageing under the velo de flor, a layer of yeast that develops on the surface of the wine, is fundamental in giving the manzanilla that fresh, saline profile that distinguishes it from other fortified wines.
Another key aspect of the winery's philosophy is its commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment. Sustainable viticulture techniques are employed and the winery seeks to reduce its ecological footprint at all stages of the production process. At the same time, the preservation of the winery's historical legacy, visible in its century-old facilities and its focus on the production of long-lived wines, is a fundamental pillar of its identity.
The leitmotiv of Bodegas Argüeso is based on the idea that each bottle tells a story that goes back centuries, but with an eye to the future. This balance between tradition and innovation is what has allowed the winery to remain relevant over the years, producing high quality wines that are appreciated both locally and internationally.
