Domaine Trapet
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Capita is the last rendition of this cuvée that Trapet will produce, because in the future all the domaine's premiers crus will be separated. The swan song vintage derives exclusively from vines trained on 'paisseaux' (as the Burgundians call the stakes, known as échalas in other regions, that support each individual vine) and was vinified without any destemming. The resulting wine is striking, soaring from the glass with scents of sweet red berries and plums mingled with orange rind, rose petals and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, it's deep and complete, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish.

Description
At Domaine Trapet, the land is not treated merely as a means of production, but as a living heritage that must be heeded. Hence their commitment to biodynamics and to a demanding, patient, almost artisanal approach to viticulture. Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Capita also had a unique character: it came from vines trained on individual stakes, an ancient and labour-intensive method inBurgundy that brings out the personality of each vine. The 2020 vintage was the last of this cuvée, as the family subsequently decided to bottle their premiers crus separately. This decision makes Capita a deeply meaningful farewell. The wine is 100% Pinot Noir and hails from Gevrey Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits, from the En Ergot and Corbeaux plots, where the shallow limestone soils and continental climate produce wines that are taut, deep and of great nobility.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru seeks to preserve the character of the terroir above any technical manipulation. The grapes undergo rigorous selection and are vinified as whole bunches, without destemming – a decision that brings energy, aromatic complexity and a more vibrant structure. Ageing in oak barrels refines the wine without overpowering it, always respecting the purity of the fruit and the vineyard’s mineral character. This is not a wine built on oak, but on the soil, the grapes and time.
Flavour
In the glass, Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Capita unfolds with elegance. It first reveals ripe red fruits, plum and blackcurrant, but soon rose petals, iris, lavender, orange peel, mint and a backdrop of cool earth and stone emerge. On the palate, it is silky, though never soft: the acidity sets the pace, the tannins are extremely fine and a salty minerality lingers on the finish. It is a Pinot Noir that is more vertical than opulent, floral, stony and refined, with a long, fragrant finish that leaves a trail of red berries, dried flowers and damp stone.
