Description

From the heart of Bonastre, in the Baix Penedès region of Tarragona, comes Sicus Garrut, a pure and honest expression of an ancestral variety: Garrut, the local name for Monastrell. This wine is born from a conviction: to give back the voice to the landscape, without make-up or artifice. Eduard Pié, the young winemaker and soul of Sicus, decided from the outset to work in dialogue with the land, not against it. He rejected fertilisers, tractors and commercial yeasts, opting for a regenerative, almost ascetic agriculture, where the ecosystem rules. The vineyard, L'Obaga de Gujó, planted 34 years ago on limestone and stony soils, is located at an altitude of 240 metres above sea level, just 6 km from the Mediterranean. There, under the influence of the sea and the Mediterranean sun, the grapes are born that give life to this vibrant red wine, deeply linked to its environment.

Winemaking

Each cluster destined for Sicus Garrut is harvested by hand, with an almost surgical approach. The grapes, without destemming, are placed whole in tanks where they ferment spontaneously for three months, in a kind of delicate infusion. The wine is extracted by draining only, without pressing, thus preserving a subtle and ethereal expression. Sicus Garrut then spends a month in clay amphorae, which gives it a porous, earthy texture, and then seven months in stainless steel, where it is refined, maintaining a vibrant tension and surprising clarity. The whole process is an act of restraint, of letting be, of not intervening beyond what is necessary.

Taste

In the glass, Sicus Garrut does not seek to seduce immediately; its charm is progressive, almost meditative. The first contact on the nose evokes crunchy black fruits - plum, redcurrant, wild blackberries - followed by a mineral veil, aromas of hot stone and a hint of white pepper. There is no fruity sweetness or oak make-up: purity rules here. There are notes of dried violets, thyme and a faint marine echo, as if the salt of the Mediterranean still vibrates in its structure.

On the palate, the entry is tense, precise, with sharp acidity and medium body, without unnecessary volume. The tannin is fine but firm, providing grip without rusticity. It moves forward with pace, leaving a dry, spicy and slightly balsamic trail. Long finish, with a saline and herbal aftertaste, with hints of liquorice, wet stone and black fruit skin.

A wine of contemplation, sincere, radically linked to its origin. Sicus Garrut does not seek to please everyone, but to thrill those who know how to listen to a landscape in every sip.
