Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2024 Soplo was produced with 75% Garnacha and the rest Monastrell, Forcallà and, this year, a little Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes fermented with 40% full clusters in stainless steel, and the wine matured in 17,000-liter vats and 500-liter barrels for six months. It has an easy profile—medium-bodied, clean and balanced, with fine tannins—and is dominated by red fruit and some spice. It has 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.7 and 5.1 grams of acidity. It's very pleasant and drinkable and more serious than what the price point might suggest. 48,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2025.

Features

Description

Rafael Cambra Soplo Tinto is a wine born as a statement of intent: to return to Fontanars dels Alforins to demonstrate that, in Valencia, Garnacha can also speak softly, without artifice, without excessive oak and without that warm heaviness that so many expect from the Mediterranean. Here, the vines are organically cultivated and grow at an altitude of 700 metres, on sandy soils with a layer of stone that forces the plant to seek depth and precision. That contrast between summers that can reach 40 degrees and the altitude that cools the nights sets the wine’s tone: ripeness, yes, but always balanced by freshness. Rafael Cambra Soplo Tinto is made from young vines, around ten years old, and stems from a very clear vision on Cambra’s part: to intervene as little as possible so that the Valencian landscape can truly find its way into the bottle. The main variety is Garnacha, and the house style seeks more transparency, juiciness and vigour than raw power.

Production

The grapes for Rafael Cambra Soplo Tinto are brought into the winery to ferment in stainless steel, a vessel which here is not intended to embellish anything, but rather to preserve the fruit’s most authentic profile. A small proportion, around 10%, ferments on the skins, adding structure, a hint of spice and a slight, noble roughness that underpins the whole. Pumping over is gentle for around 12 days, avoiding over-extraction and aiming for a fluid texture. Rafael Cambra Soplo Tinto then spends four months in French oak barrels that have been used between one and five times, where it gains a subtle depth without being overpowered by the wood. Before bottling, it is racked into concrete tanks, refining the texture and allowing the wine to settle into a more mineral and serene expression.

Taste

On the nose, Rafael Cambra Soplo Tinto moves between red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate, with that sensation of crisp fruit that seems freshly picked, but pepper, a dried spice, a faint hint of Mediterranean herbs and a very appealing salty note soon emerge. It is not a sweet or overripe Valencian Garnacha; it leans more towards the juicy, fresh and sharp side. On the palate, it has a lively, medium-bodied profile, with lively acidity, fine tannins and a sense of tension that makes it extremely drinkable. There are notes of red plum, berries, a hint of raspberry and a dry, vibrant finish, with spices, a smoky undertone and that mineral salinity that lingers on the palate. A sincere, flavourful and light-bodied Valencian red wine, yet one with character.
