Description
There are projects that are born from the impulse to explore the essential, to translate a landscape into wine with radical honesty. Such is Quinta do Estranxeiro, the Ribeira Sacra project of Eulogio Pomares and his wife, who after their success in Salnés decided to venture into the heroic viticulture of the Galician hinterland. In 2015 they started in the Penapedre area, sharing vineyards. In 2019 they took a decisive step: they acquired a small winery and the vineyard in property. Since then, they make all the wines under their own vision, committed to minimum intervention and maximum respect for the environment.
At the heart of this story is Quinta do Estranxeiro Penapedre, a red made with Mencía, Garnacha and a small proportion of Jerez. It comes from a tiny vineyard of just 0.66 hectares, located in the Esperón area, between A Cova and Porto, on a hillside with an extreme slope of 63.1% and with vines more than 150 years old. The roots are sunk in a granitic soil, where the Atlantic climate combines with continental influences, providing freshness, tension and a marked mineral identity.
Winemaking
The harvest of Quinta do Estranxeiro Penapedre is completely manual, in small boxes, on steep slopes where there is no room for machinery. A heroic and precise viticulture. Once in the winery, spontaneous fermentation is carried out without added yeasts in Castaño vats, which allows for natural micro-oxygenation without masking the fruit. Part of the grapes are vinified with stems, providing structure and verticality. After a careful and non-invasive maceration, Quinta do Estranxeiro Penapedre is aged for 18 months in 1,500-litre French oak vats, where it gains complexity and definition without losing the pure expression of the vineyard. It is not clarified or filtered, and a minimum dose of sulphur dioxide is used just before bottling.
Taste
Quinta do Estranxeiro Penapedre is a wine that does not seek to dazzle with exuberance, but to move with subtlety. On the nose, it expresses itself with aromas of fresh red fruit, soft balsamic notes, dried flowers and a marked background of wet stone and smoke. An austere, precise perfume that opens up with time and air. On the palate, it is light and taut, with vibrant acidity and very fine-grained tannins. The sensation is agile, almost aerial, but with a depth that unfolds slowly. The finish is long, saline, with hints of laurel, pomegranate skin and a lingering mineral echo. It is a wine for those who enjoy the verticality, the Atlantic character and the pure minerality that defines the great Ribeira Sacra reds.
