Prensal is a native variety from the Balearic Islands, Spain. It is fruitful and has medium ripening. Prensal is distinguishable for its big berries with thick skin when planted in fertile soils. It is sensitive to powdery mildew
Prensal wines have no acidity and they are usually blended with other varieties such as Moscatel, Chardonnay or Viogner to produce fresher wines. Its style can range from tropical and light wines to those full-bodied, with wood and almond notes. However it is recommended to take them while young. Oenologically speaking it is a variety prone to oxidation as well as reduction if aged on lees.
Prensal is one of the predominant varieties in appellations Benissalem-Mallorca and Plà i Llevant, and is usually bottled as Land of Mallorca Wine. One of the most successful Prensal wines is Quíbia, a dry full-bodied wine by Anima Negra Viticultors winery, blended 50% Prensal and 50% Callet variety, where mineral notes are dominant with tart pear and plum flavours. On the other hand, Toni Gelabert winery produces a fragrant, elegant and refreshing wine with Prensal and Moscatel. It is not an easy variety to handle in the caves as it is prone to reduction when aged on the lees and also to oxidation.
