They think the NV 20 Year Old Tawny Port is perfect for their style, which is not too oxidative and not very volatile, the profile of much older wines, and they have a balance between youth and age, fruit and nuts. This has a lot of complexity and some liqueur notes, mixing the best of both worlds. It's intense, powerful and elegant, nuanced and complex, with a velvety palate, volume and density. It's long and tasty, with a lifted finish. Superb. Many people think these wines don't age in bottle, but I love it with the same time in bottle as in wood (20+20 year!).

Description
Since 1842, the Niepoort family has cultivated an intimate relationship with time. Today, under the direction of Dirk Niepoort, this emblematic Douro house combines heritage and creative risk like few others. His vision for Tawny 20 Years Old was clear: let time speak. Rather than speed up bottling, Dirk opted to let selected wines from different vintages age for two decades in small oak pipes. The result is a blend with soul, where freshness and complexity intertwine in an almost impossible balance.
The grapes - Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and other traditional Douro varieties - come from old vineyards, planted on schist terraces under an extreme continental climate, where yields are low but concentration is very high. This harsh and demanding geography gives character, texture and acidity to the cuvée.
Winemaking
The vinification of Niepoort Old Tawny 20 years begins with fermentation in open vats, with traditional foot treading, interrupted by the addition of wine spirit to preserve the natural sugars. Ageing takes place in 550 litre pipes in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the controlled contact with oxygen develops complexity, while the freshness remains thanks to the Atlantic climate.
Taste
Niepoort Old Tawny 20 years is refinement and expressiveness. Its amber colour with coppery reflections announces a deep nose: dried figs, orange peel, toasted nuts, noble woods and sweet spices. On the palate, the texture is silky, with a delicate sweetness balanced by a lively and persistent acidity. Flavours of walnut, caramel, blond tobacco and black tea follow in layers, ending in a long, elegant finish, with saline echoes and an almost citrus freshness. Ideal with cured cheeses, egg desserts or simply on its own, slightly fresh. A wine that does not seek to impress, but to thrill.
