Description

The story behind Morey-Blanc Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds stems from a profoundly Burgundian vision of wine: not as a product, but as a landscape, a memory and a character. At Morey-Blanc, the house’s philosophy is shaped by the figure of Pierre Morey and by an approach to winemaking that has never viewed the vineyard as separate from the land that sustains it. The estate was founded with the aim of continuing to produce great Burgundy wines, with the utmost rigour in grape selection and a meticulous, patient winemaking process carried out in-house. Here, everything revolves around origin. This wine is made exclusively from Pinot Noir and comes from Taillepieds, one of Volnay’s finest and most demanding Premier Crus. The slope, poor and stony, is a mixture of marl and limestone with an abundance of small stones, forcing the vines to dig deep and yield little, but what they do produce is highly concentrated. In this cool, light-filled setting of the Côte de Beaune, the grape variety finds a particularly fragrant, taut and mineral expression.

Winemaking

The grapes for Morey-Blanc Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds are harvested by hand and rigorously selected before entering the winery. Fermentation begins naturally in vats, with controlled extraction to preserve the finesse of the cru and avoid any excess. The wine is then transferred to oak barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and continues to age for between 15 and 20 months. The work in the winery aims to support, not interfere: long resting periods, minimal racking, very moderate use of sulphur dioxide and bottling by gravity, usually without fining or filtering. Everything is geared towards preserving the purity, vitality and identity of the vineyard.

Taste

In the glass, Morey-Blanc Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds is floral, precise and restrained. It does not seek to dazzle with exuberant fruit, but rather to win you over with tension, finesse and depth. Aromas of violets, dried petals, fresh cherry, raspberry and redcurrant emerge, always against a stony, chalky and subtly spicy backdrop. On the palate, it is straightforward, vibrant and focused in the best sense, with extremely fine tannins and an acidity that sharpens every nuance. The red fruit is enveloped by a salty minerality and a long, serious and elegantly austere finish.
