Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The NV East India Solera is a Cream, a category I have not really covered in this article, which is a blend of 12-year-old Don Nuno Oloroso (80%) and San Emilio PX which is also about 12 years old, blended and aged together for a further three years in a special, slightly warmer part of the winery which replicates perhaps the character of the wines that traveled by boat to India or elsewhere. Mahogany colored with a green-amber edge, it has the nose of an old wine with notes of antique shop, wax, shoe polish, noble wood, and a touch of spices, dates and prunes, all of it very well integrated. The palate is spicy and sweet (it has 130 grams of sugar) again very integrated. At this price level it represents good value and should go well with cheeses. Drink 2013-2020.

Features

Description

Since its foundation, Lustau has been synonymous with boldness and loyalty to its origins. But perhaps no wine embodies this duality better than Lustau Cream East India Solera, a Cream that pays homage to the ancient maritime voyages to the eastern colonies, where Sherry wines, subjected to the vagaries of the ocean and extreme climates, returned transformed: darker, more complex, silkier. Inspired by this metamorphosis, Lustau' s winemakers recreated these conditions inside the winery, storing the butts in warm, humid areas, simulating the effect of the tropics on the wine. The result is a masterful blend of dry Oloroso (80 %) and Pedro Ximénez (20 %), two wines that are aged separately for 12 years in the traditional solera and criaderas system, before being blended and further refined for a further three years in the famous "East India" soleras.

Elaboration

Both components of the Lustau Cream East India Solera follow independent paths: the Oloroso, powerful and dry, develops structure and oxidative notes over more than a decade; the Pedro Ximénez, sweet and dense, offers concentration of natural sugars and raisin aromas. Once assembled, the wine is aged for three additional years in American oak butts under particularly warm and humid conditions in the cellar, replicating the marine evolution of the past. This final ageing integrates and rounds the whole, generating a complex wine, with around 130 grams of residual sugar per litre, without losing freshness.

Taste

To the eye, Lustau Cream East India Solera shows a deep mahogany colour with amber and greenish glints that betray its age and richness. On the nose, the display is generous and hypnotic : sultanas, dates, figs, black plums and molasses intertwine with layers of toffee, dark chocolate, coffee, sweet tobacco, vanilla, nutmeg and a faint echo of candied orange peel. The palate is simply silky, with a glyceric density that caresses without overwhelming. The sweetness, deep but balanced, is contained by the liveliness of the Oloroso, which provides acidity, salinity and a structure that prevents the wine from becoming heavy. The finish is very long, with notes of salted caramel, nutshell, a touch of sweet spice and an oxidative elegance reminiscent of the great meditation wines. Ideal as a digestif, but also sublime with dried fruit desserts, blue cheeses or simply on its own.
