Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The NV Single Cask Moscatel las Cruces is a single-cask bottling of Moscatel selected from one of the three existing casks in the solera, which were separated some 25 years ago to create a very old Moscatel. It has a mahogany color and the floral and citrus aromas of the variety intermixed with hints of aromatic herbs, orange peel and burnt sugar, with a less complex palate and noticeable sweetness (273 grams of residual sugar). Only 504 half-liter bottles were filled in March 2017.

Description
Since the Lustau winery decided to separate three butts of the Moscatel Emilín solera more than 25 years ago, the idea of capturing the unique profile of Moscatel de Chipiona was born, without blending, without concessions. Located in the heart of the Marco de Jerez region, Lustau has for decades been vindicating the richness of the Andalusian terroir and its singularities. This Lustau Moscatel Las Cruces Single Cask version is the result of a brave decision: to let three butts evolve untouched, preserving their character intact since they were transferred to the new winery in 2004. The grapes come exclusively from the Las Cruces estate in Chipiona, where the Atlantic climate and sandy soils give the Moscatel de Alejandría a floral, saline and deeply Mediterranean personality.
Winemaking
Lustau Moscatel Las Cruces Single Cask is made from a late harvest that concentrates natural sugars and enhances the primary aromas. Once vinified, it is aged in American oak barrels, but outside the traditional system of criaderas and soleras. The three casks were kept immobile for more than two decades, and only the lees were replaced with old Moscatel of the same origin, respecting the purity of its evolution. Its 17% alcohol and residual sugar of around 270 g/l place it in the territory of the great dessert wines, but with a freshness and structure that belie its density.
Taste
In the glass, Lustau Moscatel Las Cruces Single Cask has a dark mahogany tone with iodised reflections. The nose is enveloping and deep, marked by notes of dried figs, dates, sultanas and candied orange rind. There are also hints of incense, burnt caramel and fine varnish, which speak of its long ageing. The palate is dense, glyceric, but surprisingly balanced by a vibrant acidity that runs through the palate with precision. The sweetness is intense but never cloying, offset by hints of liquorice, nutmeg, sweet coffee and a slight bitter finish that lengthens the persistence and gives it complexity. The aftertaste is balsamic, almost saline, with echoes of candied fruit, old wood and cane honey.
Lustau Moscatel Las Cruces Single Cask is not a conventional after-dinner wine: it is a collector's item, a liquid postcard of old Chipiona, as exuberant as it is elegant. Perfect with foie, blue cheeses or simply on its own, it invites contemplation and silence. It is history in a glass, with the soul of the sea and the Andalusian sun.
