Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

From both ends of the south-facing Grand Cru Schoenenbourg that has been planted with all old Alsace varieties on gypsum marls in the past years, Jérôme François' Vin de France 2021 La Belle Colline displays a clear, white-golden color and initially exhibits Gewurztraminer aromas most of all on the pure, intense and elegant nose that releases lychee, pastry and rose petal notes intermingled with lemony limestone freshness, iodine and flinty nuances. It is fascinating how well the wine develops with aeration. After nine days poured from the same bottle, all Gewurz notes have nearly disappeared, and what comes out is pure Schoenenbourg or an exceptional grand cru; finely crushed, calcareous stones, iodine and mocha, super fine tannins and intense yet refined and very elegant, utterly complex and pure fruit with flinty nuances and ripe pineapple aromas. Elegant and even filigreed on the palate, this is a dry, fresh and transparent, lush and generous yet always finessed Schoenenbourg with an intense texture, saline acidity, fine tannin bitters and citrus fruit flavors on the elegant and well-structured finish. This is not the richest or boldest Schoenenbourg, and one erroneously tends to say not the most complex one either. But in reality, this is a highly complex Schoenenbourg that is uplifted by its finesse and fine minerality, which is all the more remarkable since the 2021 is a supple, rich and almost sweet, even heavyweight grand cru whose saline, finely tannic and absolutely refined finish slims and mineralizes this marvel with every second. And there are plenty of seconds for the aftertaste. 14.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from lot Schoe21 in February and March 2023.

Features

Description

La Grange de l'Oncle Charles La Belle Colline is a white wine that stands out for its uniqueness and complexity. Produced in Alsace, France, this white wine is a blend of three grape varieties: Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. These grapes are grown on the southern maritime slopes at both ends of the Grand Cru Schoenenbourg, known for its marl, lime and gypsum soil. Harvesting is done by hand, and the grapes are fermented together. The wine is then aged for a year on its lees in old French oak barrels.

Winemaking

The winemaking follows organic and biodynamic practices, with a focus on respect for both the vines and the consumer. Harvesting is done by hand, and the grapes are fermented together. The wine is then aged for a year on its lees in old French oak barrels. During bottling, no additives are added, maintaining the purity and intensity of the wine. This approach is reflected in the wine's aromatic notes, which include fresh flowers and yellow fruits, complemented by discreet citrus hints. On tasting, the minerality becomes more pronounced, with pineapple and lemon flavours dominating, with a finish that offers refined bitterness and a touch of salinity that stimulates the palate.

Taste

La Grange de l'Oncle Charles La Belle Colline is an experience in itself. Initially, there are aromas of Gewürztraminer, with notes of lychee, pastry and rose petals, mixed with a lemony freshness and hints of iodine. With aeration, the wine reveals its true complexity, showing remarkable elegance and finesse. On the palate, it presents itself as a dry, fresh and transparent wine, luxurious but always delicate, with an intense texture, saline acidity, fine tannin bitterness and citrus flavours on an elegant and well-structured finish. This wine is not Schoenenbourg's richest or boldest, but its complexity is enhanced by its finesse and fine minerality. At 14.5% alcohol, this wine is a masterful expression of the Alsatian winemaking tradition.
