Description
Guímaro Finca Pombeiras is much more than a name: it is an attitude to the land and to time. In the heart of Amandi, the most vertiginous and emblematic sub-zone of the Ribeira Sacra, Pedro Rodríguez honours his family's viticultural memory with a quiet but firm rebelliousness. The Pombeiras estate - just 1.2 hectares of old vines - embodies this vision. Planted more than 70 years ago on a mix of granite and slate, the Mencía vines (dotted with indigenous varieties) sink into extreme soils that demand everything from the winegrower. On this hillside overlooking the river Sil, where the work is almost vertical, a wine is born that does not impose itself, but convinces.
Winemaking
The philosophy of minimum intervention guides the entire winemaking process of Guímaro Finca Pombeiras. Harvesting is manual, respectful, almost ritualistic. The grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts in open vats of used French oak, with the whole bunch and traditional treading. The wine is neither clarified nor filtered. After fermentation, the wine is racked into used 225 and 500 litre barrels, where it rests for over a year. Just a slight dose of sulphur dioxide is added at bottling. The result is a red wine that speaks without intermediaries, without make-up, with the voice of the soil and the vintage.
Taste
Guímaro Finca Pombeiras does not seek to impress with volume, but with precision. On the nose, it displays a subtle, earthy palette: black cherry, wild raspberry, dried leaf, warm stone and a slight floral touch, almost of wilted violet. The smoky, spicy background is reminiscent of slate soil after rain. On the palate, the wine is taut and vertical. Vibrant acidity pushes it towards a long, saline finish, with fine tannins that provide structure without harshness. There is a restrained energy, an austere elegance that does not tire but invites you to discover more. A Mencía of Altura, both physically and conceptually, that vindicates the deepest character of the Ribeira Sacra.
