The official version in Bierzo now is that Estaladiña and PanyCarne are the same variety, different from Merenzao and Bastardo that is Trousseau, but they are all related. Estaladiña has a lot more color than Merenzao and also has high acidity, as I can see in the 2022 Estaladiña. It's a serious and austere wine with low-ish alcohol (13%) for a warm year, very good acidity and some spicy, herbal and peppery notes a little à la Cabernet Franc, a more Atlantic/cool-climate profile and fine-grained tannins. It matured in concrete egg for 10 months. I love this profile of austerity. 1,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.

Description
Gregory Pérez Estaldiña is a crianza red wine produced by Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba of the renowned winemaker Gregory Pérez in Carracedelo, Bierzo, without denomination of origin.
This wine is made with the Estaldiña grape variety from a single plot of the same name.
The vineyard is located in Cacabelos, on clay soils with pebbles and at an altitude of 540 metres above sea level.
Estaladiña is the name given in the Bierzo area to a slightly darker biotype of Trousseau. This pale red grape is also known as Panycarne, Bastardo or Merenzao.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand with grape selection. On arrival at the winery, some of the grapes are crushed without destemming. Fermentation takes place in a 1000 litre stainless steel tank and the wine is aged for 10 months in a 500 litre French oak barrel. It is bottled after clarification.
Taste
Mengoba Estaladiña is a robust, expressive and tasty red wine. It is very easy to drink, pleasant and medium-bodied with good freshness. Its flavours are clean and without oak notes. It has excellent tannins and acidity as a result of the characteristics of the variety.
An elegant, delicious and incomparable wine.
Gregory Pérez Estaldiña is a wine that shows all the virtues of this recovered variety. It is an expression of the delicacy of the winemaking process that results in a wine that is almost non-existent in Bierzo, or elsewhere, a rarity!
This wine is perfect to enjoy pleasantly at romantic dinners and to accompany rice dishes with meat.
